EdTech Learning Management System is a web application project built by ZTABS over 5 months. The challenge: [object Object] Key results: 31% to 68% course completion rate, $4,800/Month monthly saas cost savings, 3 Weeks to 4 Days course creation time.
The client was paying for 4 separate SaaS tools that did not integrate well. Student progress data was fragmented across platforms, making it impossible to identify at-risk learners. Course completion rates sat at 31%, and the lack of branded certificates reduced the perceived value of the programs.
We built a Next.js platform with a drag-and-drop course builder that lets instructors assemble lessons from video, text, quizzes, and downloadable resources. Videos are uploaded to AWS S3 and served through CloudFront with adaptive bitrate streaming. The progress tracking engine monitors lesson completion, quiz scores, and time-on-task to flag students who fall behind. Automated email nudges re-engage inactive learners. Upon course completion, the system generates branded PDF certificates with unique verification codes.
Course completion rates increased from 31% to 68% within 4 months, driven by progress tracking and automated re-engagement emails. The consolidated platform eliminated $4,800 per month in third-party SaaS fees. Instructor course creation time dropped from 3 weeks to 4 days on average.

The real options on the table before we picked this stack for EdTech Learning Management System.
| Alternative | Best For | Cost Signal | Biggest Gotcha |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teachable, Thinkific, or Kajabi | Solo creators and small studios selling courses fast | $39-$389/mo + transaction fees | Branding and UX ceiling is real; learner analytics and cohort tooling are basic. |
| Canvas LMS or Moodle | Institutions with IT teams comfortable running open-source LMS | $0 self-hosted or $10-$30/learner/yr managed | Consumer-friendly UX is weak; payments and certification workflows are clunky. |
| Docebo or Absorb LMS | Corporate training organisations wanting enterprise features | $30k-$150k+/yr | Pricing is prohibitive for sub-10k-learner products; licensing model assumes enterprise procurement. |
| Custom Next.js + Node.js + Stripe (our build) | Certification businesses with custom learner flows, cohort management, and revenue-share with instructors | ~$220k-$320k build + $3k-$7k/mo ops | Video hosting and adaptive streaming costs grow with library hours; without CDN tuning bandwidth eats margin. |
Specific numbers — build cost, ops, and the scale at which custom beat the off-the-shelf alternative.
The custom LMS cost ~$260k to build + ~$5k/mo ops including video hosting and Stripe fees. Teachable Pro at $159/mo plus transaction fees across 22k paid learners would have surrendered roughly $195k/yr in platform fees alone (10% of paid sales). The custom build broke even at month 14 on transaction-fee savings. Below 3k paid learners Teachable or Thinkific is faster to value; above 12k learners the custom LMS nets ~$170k/yr in retained transaction fees and enables instructor revenue-share arrangements the SaaS stack does not support.
Specific production issues this pattern has surfaced for real teams.
Adding high-resolution instructor video at scale pushed transcoding bills sharply; sensible default resolutions plus adaptive bitrate instead of multi-resolution re-encodes cut costs materially.
Students shared quiz answers across devices; randomized question order plus a question-bank rotation made answer-sharing less useful without adopting heavy proctoring.
Employers verified certificates months later; any breaking change to verification URL structure would break past certificates, so a permanent redirect plan had to be part of every release.
We say this out loud because lying to close a lead always backfires.
K-12 compliance (FERPA, COPPA), parent views, and district-wide rostering differ from the adult-learner paid-course model here.
Synchronous cohort programs need strong live-class scheduling, breakout rooms, and Zoom integration beyond the asynchronous course player's scope.
Enterprise L&D tying into Workday or Cornerstone via SCORM and xAPI standards needs deeper LMS interoperability than the baseline platform provides.
