The Challenge Behind Census Books

Self-publishing aggregators take a per-sale cut that compounds over an author's career. A successful indie writer doing 10K USD/year through an aggregator surrenders 1–2.5K of that as recurring distribution fees — for what is essentially a syndication API the platform pays once. Authors needed a flat-fee alternative that didn't tax future success.

How We Built Census Books

We built Census Books as a flat-fee publishing platform. Authors upload a manuscript, the review pipeline runs automated formatting checks plus human quality review, and the system converts to EPUB and PDF in the formats each retailer requires. Syndication then pushes to 50+ retailers including Kindle, Apple Books, B&N, and Kobo through their respective publishing APIs. Royalty accounting reconciles per-retailer settlement reports back to the author dashboard with no platform cut. Authors pay the GBP 75 setup once and keep every subsequent sale.
